Mexican Living: Christmas

I have no memory of Christmas, 2003. Now before you jump to one of those, "Oh, yeah we know," conclusions let me say that both my wife and I were deathly ill from some flu bug that we contracted while visiting San Miguel de Allende.

We spent Christmas, 2003, crawling to the bathroom and then back to bed. We were not even able to celebrate our wedding anniversary that was the day after Christmas.

This was to be our first Christmas in Mexico and we were disappointed to say the least.

Christmas, 2004, we were able to see a Mexican Christmas in Puerto Vallarta where we vacationed with some friends.

Christmas in Mexico is familiar and yet delightfully different--foreign. And, I must add, an exhausting month of celebrations.

The celebrations begin December 3rd with the LA VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE. This is the Patron Saint of Mexico whose celebration lasts until December 12th. They say The Virgin is "the Mother of God" as she appeared on Tepeyac, the pre-Hispanic site of the temple to Tontanslin.

Being more a symbol of Mexican nationalism, the Mexican devotion to her seems, at least to this author, to surpass the real religious veneration. The Virgin is what unites the normally strict and obvious social classes. She transcends class structure.

Though the celebration of the LA VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE seems foreign to the American's experience, the Mexican Nacimiento is all too familiar.

Spanish monks first introduced Nacimiento or The Nativity scene. It has since taken on some of the local tradition and influences.

For example, there is the "rooster crowing" to announce the birth of the Christ child. There is Satan lurking in his cave to tempt the shepherds on their journey to see the Christ child. There is also another uniquely Mexican twist to this Nativity:

"Foreigners are frequently confused when confronted by nativity scenes and other Christmas decorations all through January, and even into February. Even more puzzling to newcomers are 4 inch figures of Mary and Joseph and a nearly life-size Christ child. Nevertheless, there is tradition to explain this, too. On January 6, during the fiesta to honor the arrival of the Three Kings at the manger, a special ring-shaped bread called the Rosca?will be served. Baked into the bread is one or more small plastic figures of the Child God. The guests who find these images in their serving of bread are named the Godparents of the Christ Child from the Nacimiento. It is then their responsibility to host a party on February 2, El Dia de Candlelaria or the Day of Purification, the final celebration of a Christmas holiday which began on December 3 with the beginning of nine day celebration of The Virgin of Guadalupe." There are, of course, The Posadas. After the arrival of the Spaniards, this tradition of nine days of children's processions, a reenactment of the birth of Christ, the monks invented this as a means to evangelize the Aztecs.

"This procession symbolizes the journey made by Joseph and Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem and Josephs search for shelter (Posada) at an Inn (also Posada). The peregrinos (pilgrims) include Joseph leading Mary on a burro, an Angel, shepherds, kings, and a large flock of excited, giggling, jostling, bumping, wiggling, shiny-eyed others, most with bright ribbon and flower decked shepherds?staffs which they tap in time to the music." [2]

The children march from house to house with "Joseph" asking for "room at the inn." They are refused until they hit the prearranged house where they are finally admitted and a party ensues.

There is so much more: The Piatas, The Pastorels, La Noche Buena, Navidad, the giving of La Flor de la Nochebuena, Dia de Innocents, and Ao Viejo and Ao Neuva.

Where To Buy Nintendo Wii Consoles In The UK

Well. It seems like a thousand years ago that Nintendo promised a Console that would shake the world and, sure enough, they turned up with the Nintendo Wii Console and everyone almost wet themselves with excitement and suddenly developed a desperate craving for one.

The year moved on and the time was fast approaching when Santa was due to visit and lots and lots of anxious kids (and parents) waited to see if he'd bring one for them. Unfortunately, Mr. Nintendo's elves hadn't quite made enough. Well, to be honest, they hadn't made anywhere near enough which, I'm sure you'll agree, was a bit of a sod, and hardly anyone got one. We also had the problem with a company who took payment for a couple of thousand Wiis and then vanished without supplying any.

Anyway, we're now into 2008 and things don't really seem to have improved. There still don't seem to be any Wii Consoles in the shops and when they do turn up, it's like a plague of locusts descending on the shop and they've sold out within the first hour. They seem to have a few available in the US, but of course the voltage is different and it won't work on our side of the Atlantic. You can buy a Japanese spec Nintendo Wii from a few places but you then have a warranty problem. So where do you get one?

The best places are Amazon UK and, not surprisingly, eBay UK. Amazon seems to have a few in stock most of the time but they can be expensive. I have an Amazon Affiliate shop for the Nintendo Wii and at the time I'm writing this, I've sold 8 this week but only three of them at the RRP of 179. The others have been somewhere over 250. eBay have new Nintendo Wii at anything between 180 and 300 available from UK based Business Sellers and you have the security of PayPal. Just make sure that your seller has good feedback for selling the same sort of stuff and, if possible, get an email address and phone number. Happy Hunting!

It is time to eat now. Malaysia is rich with its local foods. There are numerous of local food that you should try. For me, if you came to Malaysia and eat at the five star hotel without trying the local foods. There is no point for you to have vacation here. Go out and try the local foods especially the hawker. Some of them serve the best food in town but make sure they are clean.

When I went to Langkawi, there is a very huge and beautiful restaurant near to my hotel. Then I took a cab to Kuah for some shopping, the taxi driver was very friendly he told us where we should go for shopping plus he told us where is the best restaurant in Langkawi. He also told us that the huge and beautiful restaurant is very expensive and the food are not tasty. After some arrangement he agree to take us to his recommend restaurant.

At 8.00 p.m he pick up us at hotel lobby. He took us to the Kampung Nelayan Restaurant located in Kuah. However this restaurant is very hard find. For you information this restaurant was featured in Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan( a famous culinary television how). So no wonder there are no table available for us. We have to wait about 10 minutes to get a table but it worth to wait. All the seafood are very fresh and the most important part is cheap.

After about an hour later, the taxi driver came to send us back to the hotel room. We bought some foods for the taxi driver as a symbol of thank you. The food was so good and it makes me forget about my high blood pressure .I think I should take a good care of my health after this.

How to Choose the Best Broadband Internet Access Option

Not so many years ago, accessing the Internet was a one size fits all?technology. When you wanted to surf the web, send and receive emails, post files to a web site, or just play around on AOL, you accessed it all through your telephone line using a modem and a standard dial-up account. Most of us didnt mind because we realized that the slow speeds we endured were shared by everyone else. The notion of Internet speed envy?had yet to emerge.

Well, those days are long gone! Nowadays, in ever-increasing numbers, people are dumping their old dial-up modems and those slow connections for a much faster Internet experience through DSL, cable, and satellite technologies. In 2002, only 21% of Internet users had broadband connections at home. As of late 2005, that number had risen to 53% [Source: Pew Internet & American Life Project].

For the remaining 47% still using dial-up access, its often because they live where DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and cable technologies are not available. Yes, there are still lots of rural areas that do not have access to either. Among those who do have access to broadband connections, it is most often older and poorer Americans who choose to keep dial-up access.

Which Internet Access Option is Best for You?

You may be wondering which broadband solution is the best option. While much depends on whats available in your area, for many users it comes down to a personal choice, centered on convenience, speed, and cost. Lets examine the various technologies and the relative advantages of each.

Cable Internet Access

Using your homes existing cable television lines, you can get Internet access included for an additional fee. Expect a large speed increase versus dial-up access. In fact, in many cases cable Internet access is the fastest alternative. Installation is usually completed quickly with just one visit from your cable companys technicians. You will also need a cable modem (supplied by the cable company in virtually every instance, but can be purchased separately as well).

Clearly, the biggest advantage of going with cable access is speed. All things being equal, it is the fastest of the three broadband alternatives, with a top speed of 10 Mbps (Megabits per second). Having said that, cable speeds can be substantially reduced if you share a local network with a lot of other subscribers. People living in densely packed areas, or locations where the cable company has a lot of users on the same network, will only realize a fraction of that top speed. Its a good idea to call your cable provider and ask some pointed questions about these issues before you order. Better yet, ask neighbors who have cable Internet what kind of speed they get.

DSL Internet Access

Digital Subscriber Line access utilizes your existing telephone line in an innovative way to greatly increase your Internet speeds. While cable is usually faster, DSL is substantially speedier than traditional dial-up access and offers a much-improved experience for a modest increase in cost. Installation is quick, usually only requiring a simple change at your homes phone box outside of the house by a phone company technician. You will need a DSL modem, which is included at no extra charge by most providers when you sign an extended service contract.

If you live where DSL is not currently available, be patient. Major providers like Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T are spreading their coverage areas quickly. Even many rural areas can expect to have DSL access in the coming months.

The two big advantages of choosing DSL are cost and speed. You will only need to get the modem and follow some simple instructions to configure it. If you agree to a one-year contract with your phone service provider (most major carriers), the modem will cost you nothing. And the service itself is generally in the $15-$40 per month range, making it a good bargain.

Speed is a bit trickier with DSL. It is slower than cable (top speed is about 6 Mbps), and the major providers offer different packages that limit speeds based on the price you pay per month. To further muddy the waters, DSL is whats known as a distance limited?technology. This means that how far you live from the nearest telephone company switching station determines your actual speed. Those living within a few yards will experience the highest speeds, while those at the other end of your street or block may only get half that speed. As with cable, call your local phone provider and ask questions about the various services and what kind of actual speed you can expect based on your exact physical location in relation to the switching station for your street or neighborhood. If you have a next-door neighbor with DSL, ask what his or her experience has been, as yours will probably be very similar.

Satellite Internet Access

Satellite Internet access uses a small mounted dish and group of electronics to send and receive data through satellites orbiting the Earth over the equator. Users must have a clear view of the Southern sky (in the U.S.) from the face of the dish, unobstructed by trees, buildings, and other obstacles. Coaxial cabling connects the outdoor equipment to indoor send-and-receive equipment that then connects to your computer through a standard USB connector or network card.

The major advantage with satellite Internet access is faster connection speeds for people who live where cable and DSL are not available. Users can expect to download data at a rate that is about 10 to 30 times faster than dial-up access. While satellite Internet connections are significantly faster than dial-ups, they are slower than cable and DSL, and should not be the first choice for those who do have cable or DSL available to them. Satellite access is also more expensive than DSL or cable and can suffer outages when the weather turns ugly. Clearly, the other two are better options unless you live where they are not available.

The Bottom Line

Overall, cable and DSL are terrific broadband Internet access solutions for the majority of people who live in urban or suburban locations. Satellite access adds a much-needed alternative for folks living in rural areas, completing the coverage area for the vast majority of America and Canada. While proponents of both cable and DSL have legitimate arguments in favor of their services, deciding between them should be made on an individual basis, determined by the actual speeds and costs for each in your location.

If speed is your top priority and you live where there are not a lot of other users sharing the local cable network, go with cable (especially if your neighbors report high speeds and good service). If not, look into DSL. If cost is your main consideration and speed isnt as important, a lower-end DSL service will probably be a better fit, as long as you dont live too far from the nearest telephone switching station. Finally, if you live in a rural area, satellite Internet access may be right up your alley, especially if you long for faster downloads and web site surfing.

If you do live in a rural area where cable or DSL are not an option then your best bet would be to go with the new WildBlue Satellite System.

Is Virtual Voice-Mail For You?

I often consult business owners who are just starting out with a home-based business. They are often unsure whether to use their home phone number, cell phone number, or get an extra phone line. I often recommend a little known service called virtual voice-mail. With virtual voice-mail, you get a phone number, but it doesn't ring anywhere. Just like any voice-mail, you record an outgoing message, your callers can leave you messages, and you can retrieve those messages any time by calling into your mailbox. Many services even allow you to log into your account online and listen to your messages on your computer. Plus, they are very affordable at about $10/month, and often don't require a deposit or start-up fee. Many of these companies even allow you to pay via pay pal, which means you don't have to worry about giving out your credit card number.

The only drawback I can think of is that it doesn't connect to an actual phone line, so you can't answer it if you wanted to, but here are some reasons why I think virtual voice-mail is a great option for many start-ups:

Avoid the expense of getting another phone line

You shouldn't take business calls at home if you have potentially screaming kids or a barking dog in the background

Using a cell phone is less professional

Your outgoing message will include your company name and will be more professional than a cell phone our answering machine message

You can retrieve messages, and return calls at your convenience

You can find some companies that provide this service by doing a search for "virtual voice-mail" online. This may be a service that can help you get off the ground!

Are you a big fan of YouTube? If you're anything like me, then you endlessly spend the day looking for the newest and funniest video clips uploaded. Well, thanks to Apple's iPhone, we video addicts now have our golden fleece. The iPhone lets us enjoy videos wherever we are.

One of the best functions that Apple is using the sell the iPhone is its online video watching capabilities through YouTube. This allows owners to watch any video they want from a library of millions with a constant stream of new ones being uploaded everyday. What's great about the IPhone is that users can explore all these new videos and old favorites without learning a whole new search process on the iPhone's easy to use platform.

Here is a quick and easy tutorial on how to watch these videos:

To begin with touch or tap the "YouTube" icon from the main screen of your iPhone. The icon should look like a tiny television on your screen. Touching this directs you to YouTube's main page.

Once you're on the main page of YouTube, find the "Search" button to get started. One common mistake most beginner iPhone users make is when typing in keywords; they forget to lightly touch the space for keywords. There needs to be contact with the keyword field or you're doing a lot of typing for nothing.

Use either specific or broad keywords to find any new videos on YouTube's site. The virtual keypad makes it quite simple type in words that can help you locate any specific video you want.

Now that you on the "Search Results" page, highlight the icon labeled "Video" of a YouTube result that may work for you search query. To access the video, use your index finger to press down on the icon. Any accompanying information the video has will be displayed.

So you have done your test and you know your speeds, but what do those digits actually mean? Broadband speed is measured usually in Megabits per second. This is usually abbreviated to Mb, Mbps or Mb/sec. These are all the same thing. Its important not to get Mb's (megabits) mixed up with MB's (megabytes) as MB's are about eight times as big as Mb's. If you download anything you will notice that file sizes from things like music and movies are measure in MB's.

Dial up internet is so much slower than Broadband that it is measured in Kilobits per second. This is usually abbreviated to either K, Kb, Kbps or Kb/sec. There are 1000 Kilobits in a Megabit.

So some useful things to know are roughly how much big downloads can be-for instance a single music track would be around 4MB and an album would be anywhere between 40MB and 5MB.A feature film would around 700-000Mb, although the DVD quality ones can be in the Gb's (Gigabytes). If you want to game online- World of Warcraft is the most popular online game but also games like Splinter Cell are widely used- then you can expect to download between 4 MB and 40MB an hour. Keep this in mind when you are selecting your broadband package as many service providers will limit downloads. For some people 2GB a month is plenty to browse with, however if you are gaming or downloading then you should look at a higher limit. Otherwise your speed may be capped by your provider once you have exceeded your limit. For instance if you have a 20Mb connection you may find it capped to 512Kb once over the download limit. Other providers will charge per Mb downloaded in excess of your cap.

Now what about the speeds? These days your line speed can be anything from 512Kb to a whopping 24Mb. This is what is advertised by broadband service providers. You have to do a broadband speed check to make sure that your area can receive this high speeds though, otherwise you may be paying for it and not using it.

Two Enter Internet Battle

Consumers understand that when there is more competition in a market, there are lower prices. This is especially true in the computer industry where it is reported that 68% of households have a computer. According to the Computer Industry Almanac, the worldwide number of Internet users will exceed 1 billion this year with the United States leading with over 185 million users. The number of users will continue to increase as well as competitors, forcing companies to offer faster connections at a cheaper price. Two technologies that will lend a hand in allowing new players into the Broadband market are BPL and WIMAX.
Broadband Over Power Lines, BPL
BPL is a technology that allows Internet data to be transmitted over utility power lines and is also referred to as Power-line Communications or PLC. The technology works by modulating high-frequency radio waves with the digital signals from the Internet. These radio waves are fed into the utility grid at specific points, then travel along the wires and pass through the utility transformers into homes and businesses. One main concern by officials in the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), is that BPL will interfere with radio systems including fire, police, short-wave and land mobile. There are other groups who are taking the initiative in realizing this potential including the IEEE which has begun to develop IEEE P1675, "Standard for Broadband over Power Line Hardware."
This technology has gained national attention with reports by the Wall Street Journal that industry powerhouses Google and Goldman Sachs have invested nearly $100 million into Current Communications Group, a company that provides high-speed Internet access over electrical power lines. According to Reuters, CCG will use the financing to deploy voice, video and data services in domestic and global markets. IBM is also currently researching the use of electrical power lines to provide internet access by opening a BPL center in Houston with CenterPoint Energy although IBM has declined to put a dollar value on the amount invested.
Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, WIMAX
WiMAX, also known as IEEE 802.16, is a standards-based wireless technology that provides broadband connections over long distances and is intended for wireless metropolitan area networks". It can be used for wireless networking in much the same way WiFi is used today while also allowing for more efficient bandwidth use and interference avoidance. WiMAX has a broadband wireless access range of 30 miles compared to only 100 ?300 feet for a WiFi wireless local area network.
WiMAX can be used for a number of applications, including "last mile" broadband connections, hotspots, and high-speed connectivity for businesses. Alvarion, a global organization headquartered in Israel that supplies integrated Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) solutions, has announced it will supply satellite provider DirecTV Group Inc. with equipment that uses WIMAX technology in order to enhance customer upstream bandwidth requirements. By implementing last mile?broadband connections, DirecTV would then be able to supply faster connections to rural areas where it would cost millions to lay down the cable lines necessary for high speed. Another application under consideration is gaming. Microsoft is looking to make WiMax a standard feature in its Xbox 360. This would allow gamers with similar equipment to interact with other players without any internet access. All the funcionality of WiFi with improved range and reduced network latency makes WiMAX a very attractive alternative.

VPN Over Satellite

Satellite Internet services offer high speed Internet connections to offices and homes across the US. The connections are fast and comparable to broadband, DSL and cable modem. The transponders used for transmitting the signals are placed at a distance of 22,300 miles above the equator. The time required for a signal to cover the two-way distance is approximately 480 milliseconds and it is known as latency time. There is another latency time between the network operations center and the World Wide Web. These two time factors add to a total latency time of around 600 milliseconds from the time the signal emits from the dish to the time it is received back at the dish. This is known as the ping time. The ping time causes delay hence, Satellite Internet is not considered suitable for many real-time applications. We shall see some of the drawbacks that are caused by ping time delays.

As a home user if you want to play online games Satellite Internet may not be the ideal option. Setting-up virtual private networks (VPN) through Satellite Internet is not a viable proposition. There are many new technologies being developed to overcome the delay in ping times. One such technology is RELIA technology which has pending US patents. This technology overcomes long ping times and packet loss, improving the performance and reliability of Satellite Internet services. The technology has been developed by Niwot Networks. Apart from ping time delays there are factors such as packet loss which hamper the quality of Satellite Internet communication. RELIA helps in reducing ping time and packet delays that happen if data and voice packets are transmitted over naked TCP.

There is reason for Satellite Internet users to be glad. The tests carried out with this new technology prove that RELIA will definitely help Satellite Internet providers in reducing ping time. In one particular test carried out with 10 files of 1 Mb, losing 8 packets out of 200 with 600 milliseconds ping time, the naked TCP connections failed 72 out of 133 trials before all the files were transferred which is 63%. When RELIA technology was used the failure time was only 7%. It would not be surprising to see that leading Satellite Internet providers such as HughesNet using this technology over naked TCP to reduce ping times.

Satellite Internet subscribers have to wait for faster browsing experience until technologies are stabilized. There are companies which make gateways for Satellite Internet providers to handle packet delay and loss. Satellite Internet providers are weighing different options to offer better browsing experience to subscribers. HughesNet, one of the leading service providers has 325,000 connections presently across the United States and serves 99% of all US zip codes. The numbers prove that Satellite Internet is slowly catching up and it would not be long before it captures more market share from other service providers offering DSL, broadband and cable modem connectivity.
